Places to Advertise?
When a fledgeling organization is starting out, it needs people first and foremost.
Where are the people who would benefit from this kind of user's group? It could be someplace where they're already using Unity extensively, or it could be someplace where people use something else (cough*FLASH*cough), but would find Unity better for their purposes.
In response to this, please list any forums, boards, sites, or events where you think word of the Unity Users Group could get some people in here. The goal right now is just to build the list, so the owners of this site get new ideas where to advertise.
(The idea of everyone rushing out to all those sites simultaneously would be cool, but let's wait a while before associating the UUG with the "Spam Army.")

Absolutely, I would totally appreciate any plugs and am happy to help any way I can to help out.
Very close on finding out about a cash injection for UUG that will not only include a overall site polish and added functionality, but also some resources to enable resources to push it out.
Plan to be at Unite and will likely pick up the tab at a bar for the first gathering of UUG Chapters and also initiate new ones.
In the short term I can build a few UUG banner ads for Unity related sites and blogs.
What would you like to see in terms of added functionality in site and tools you need to help promote?
Cheers,
J.Joly
As of now, I'm not sure this site needs much more functionality. It has forums, it has boards for geographic areas, it has what it needs for people to find each other and start talking.
The first thing it needs is the people, and that's what the advertising would help bring in. Just be ready to batten down the hatches on the off (but wonderful) chance that you get a lot of people.
If we not only get the people but they start scheduling meet-ups, a calendar of some sort would help to get the word out about those gatherings.
Third, the lowest priority of the bunch: this board is set up as a user group for Unity developers and fans. Unity games/scenes can be served up over the web. It might be nice to have some templates and a little file storage space set aside for serving up featured samples, project source, or interesting resources. The thinking is that if we get the people and they start scheduling get-togethers, wouldn't it be nice if they had something to talk about or to build from?
That last two get sticky because you have to consider who gets to post events, projects, and special pages, and then giving them the privilege to do so.
Territan,
As one of the most motivated and enthusiastic UUG members, I though I would share some amazing news.
I few months back I applied to Telefilm Canada's New Media department to help finance both the UUG site and also throw events in Canada's three major cities.
Run by our Government's Department of Heritage, with the goal is to sponsor events that help support and train developers in this country -- but with global scope.
That being said they have agreed to cover half the cost, with dimeRocker, along with sponsors, covering the other half.
After a two months waiting, the word came down...
It's official -- they have agreed to not only help further develop UUG.com, but also fund Unity events/workshops in Toronto and Montreal (and the recently held Vancouver which is where this initiative was launched).
Shall confirm dates on shortly - but tentatively we are shooting to events the first week of November between game on Ontarion and the Montreal Game Summit.
Also I plan to be at "Unite" with dimeRocker and plan to have hold the for first annual "UUG Chapter Beltfight" - for all UUG locals in attendance. I will be picking up the tab - best get your drinking shoes polished up.
Although the gas is coming from Canada then intent is to grow an international UUG machine. I would like to discuss in detail teh ideas you have for advertising and groundswell.
Now that I have a little cashflow I will have my designer add a showcase section, as well as a calendar to help Unity devs meetup.
Looking forward to more feedback. Big changes afoot in coming month at UUG.
Cheers,
J.Joly
That is good news! Congratulations! (And remember that formal recognition is also a good selling point for the group—hint hint)
I know a few things about advertising, design for print and web, and the workings of small groups. I'm not sure how much I'll ultimately be able to contribute to your efforts.
For instance, I could likely help whip up some graphic banners for the organization. I'm not so well traveled that I know of a lot of places to put them, and some sites might require non-standard banners (something other that 468x60). That's why I started this thread: to find out what those places are, so we can whip up banners in appropriate sizes.
Territan,
Do you have a specific kind of advertising or marketing in mind? You can always do PPC ads or facebook ads. That might strum up a following. There is also something called remarketing that you can look into that might help you with your business services.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

SIEGE in Atlanta is coming up in October. We're doing a Unity panel and that would be a great place to get word of Unity and the Unity Users Group out.
